Mission Statement

Women Who Made Johnson City is a Gold Award project with the goal of addressing the global issue of female representation in historical documentation. The women presented by the project are selected because of their demonstrated leadership, dedication to their city and community, and strength in the face of adversity. The women are commemorated by a plaque in a location where they made significant impact in the community, and they are maintained and proudly displayed by the current proprietors of these locations. The public has the opportunity to further the project by submitting applications for women in Johnson City history they believe deserve to be celebrated as well.

The Lady of the Fountain

The crest of Women Who Made Johnson City is an image of the Lady of the Fountain, a statue that has adorned her Fountain Square in the heart of Johnson City since around 1894.The image used here is from 1915, in her original resting place on Fountain Square. Since then, she has been relocated and repaired several times, and she now resides at the corner of Buffalo and W Main. She can be considered one of the original Women Who Made Johnson City due to the citizen's dedication towards her. Read more at https://www.bcyesteryear.com/ladyfountain.
